A foreign company named Slay, which makes baby food as well as many other products for children all over the world, has been informed about it by a Swiss NGO and the International Baby Food Action Network which works for the health of children all over the world. In its report, which is a concern organization, it alleged that the health of children in India is being played with in the name of baby food. More sugar is being added to children's diet on the basis of 2.7 grams per serving to make children addicted from childhood, whereas in other countries like Switzerland, America, Germany etc. sugar is not added at all. This is a very dangerous subject in which children develop metabolic disorders due to their addiction of eating too much sugar since childhood and their food habits or taste buds develop in such a way throughout their life that they eat too much sugar due to which, in the future, the chances of children developing diabetes and suffering from obesity as well as other diseases increases manifold. The surprising thing is that such cases which compromise health are not investigated from within the country but by a foreign non-profit organization and this issue is raised. Let us analyze how serious this issue is and how there is a conspiracy to change the eating habits of the new generations of India and expose them to serious diseases.

Diabetes in India
According to a recent report by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 100 million i.e. more than 10 crore people in India are suffering from diabetes and this what is also surprising is that according to this report, there are 136 million 13.6 crore people in India or 15.6% of the country's population who are pre-diabetic. Thus, if we combine these two figures, we will find that there are only five countries in the world whose total population is more than the total number of diabetic and pre-diabetic people of India, that is why India is now the world's leading diabetic country. It has also come to be called Capital. Between 2019 and 2021, more than three crore people in India became diabetes patients, even according to some reports, 65% of the deaths in the country are due to non-communicable diseases like diabetes.
Diabetes Risk in IndiaICMR's Youth Diabetes Registry reveals that one in four people under the age of 25 in India suffers from type-2 diabetes, while type-2 diabetes is mostly found in older people. Not only are genetic factors responsible for the high probability of diabetes among the people of India, but our changing eating and living habits are also considered a factor for the increasing spread of diabetes in the country. |
What is Diabetes? How does it happen?
What is the effect of wrong diet ?
It was believed that diabetes is seen only in older people, but studies conducted in India show that the graph of diabetes is increasing rapidly in India between the age of 20 and 30, where the ICMR report states that It is said that 25.3% of the diabetic youth below 25 years of age are suffering from diabetes, regarding which health experts believe that if the rapid spread of diabetes among the youth is not checked and treated soon, then in future they will develop chronic diseases. The risk of developing the disease may increase as the increasing diabetes among Indian youth is seen to be associated with the increasing incidence of heart stroke, cardiac arrest and kidney disease among them and also in the country, which may also have a negative impact on the average age of the next generation of India. .
Conspiracy to take away traditional food to make people sick
Multinational companies, through their misleading advertisements, are trying to change people's eating habits and tastes through chemicals, due to which there is no longer anything like local food in India, but due to globalization and western modernization in India today. Fast food has replaced traditional food. Today's generation likes to eat junk food like pizza, burgers and hot dogs which are filled with high calories and fat. The fast food industry in India is growing at a compound annual growth rate of 18%. Multinational companies have a big role in this increasing demand for fast food because if traditional food is prepared at home then the turnover and profits of multinational companies cannot increase. According to the National Sample Survey (NSSO), today India spends 2.1% of its total expenditure on fast food, which is more than the amount spent on fruits and vegetables.
Solution to rapidly increasing diabetes in India
To prevent such unhealthy and unregulated products from coming into the market which promote diabetes. Although the guidelines of Indian Government and FSSAI also ensure that all the food products available in the market have the percentage mark of their components like sugar, calories, fat etc., but even then the company does not follow these rules completely. Believes or hides her unhealthy status from the public under the guise of publicity. India a large number of products are sold in India which contain no nutrients and contain high amounts of sugar and harmful chemicals. Many such products are sold in the Indian market, which are banned in other countries. Many times, multinational companies are successful in launching and selling their products in the market because the guidelines of the regulators in India are not clear. There is a need to stop companies who make false misleading advertisements from launching such products in the market and their misleading advertisements and for this we can also learn from countries like South Africa and Mexico where this has been ensured that unhealthy or added sugar labels should be placed on all food products and beverages that have sugar or fat content above the healthy margin to enable consumers to make informed purchasing decisions, as well as to support those living with the disease in the fight against diabetes. The government also needs to provide access to good health care for the people and improve health care infrastructure.
Diabetes cases are increasing in cities as well as villages. In today's situation, diabetes is no longer an urban centric disease in India, but if we look at the trends of diabetes, we come to know that even though diabetes promotion is more in urban areas today, in terms of pre-diabetes, rural areas are less. It is ahead of urban areas because ICMR report shows that in our country the number of patients converting from pre-diabetes to diabetes is very high. Such packaged foods and wrong eating habits are responsible for bringing a large population of India into the category of pre-diabetes. Not only this, according to the study released by The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology in 2023, in the coming 5 years, 60% of the pre-diabetic people of the country will reach the diabetic category in which the lead author of this study, Dr. R. M. Anjana says that this is a time bomb for a country like India because most of the population of India lives in rural areas and we do not see any rural-urban divide in the pre-diabetic population of the country. |
Nestle's Cerelac controversy
An investigation into Nestlé baby products by "The International Baby Food Action Network, (IBFAN)", a Swiss NGO, has revealed wide variations in the sugar labels of Nestlé baby products in different countries. A company named Nestle sells its baby products which contain harmful adulteration of sugar in developing countries like India, Ethiopia, Thailand etc. Nestle company, which is headquartered in Switzerland, sells its products without any adulteration of sugar in the country. This company itself, in many countries where it manufactures sugar-free baby products, claims that sugar-free products are beneficial for the health of children, but on the other hand, in the countries where the company manufactures sugar-free baby products, about 2.7 kg of sugar is added per serving. If we get more grams of sugar then we argue that we do not compromise on the quality and nutrients of our children. The investigation, conducted by Public Eye, a non-profit NGO based in Switzerland, the company's parent country, examined approximately 150 baby products from various countries, and found that Nestle's products in South Asian (including India), African and Latin American markets. Sugar levels are much higher than in Europe. It has been told in this report that Cerelac is a product of Nestle which is effective for more than 6 months.
Especially fed to children in the U.K., the amount of added sugar in it is 2.7 grams per serving, whereas in the U.K. And Nestle Cerelac in Germany does not contain any amount of add on sugar and the most shocking thing is that in Thailand the amount of add on sugar in the same product is 6 grams, which is the highest among the products tested. In 2015, WHO had issued guidelines that whether a child or an adult, no more than 10% of the energy consumed in a day should be from added sugar. And at the same time, we should also try to reduce it from 10% to 5% or even 25 grams, the less we consume its quantity, the better it will be for our health.
In India alone, 15 Cerelac products analyzed were found to contain an average of 2.7 grams of added sugar per serving, with this added sugar being shown on packaging in India as a requirement based on FSSAI regulations. On the other hand, these companies are so clever that in the Philippines, five out of eight samples had 7.3 grams of sugar per serving, which was not mentioned on the packaging.
Nestle Company's total sales in India in 2022 were Rs 16,897 crore and profit was Rs 2391 crore. Talking about the whole world, this company did a business of Rs 8,68,164 crore in 2023, while the total profit of the company was Rs 1.04 lakh crore. |
Proceedings of Consumer Affairs Minister
The matter was reported to FSSAI by the Consumer Affairs Minister and an investigation was sought. FSSAI said that if any irregularity is found regarding added sugar in this Nestle product, then strict action will be taken against it.

According to a WHO study report, this added sugar should not be given at all to children below two years of age because it can later lead to diabetes or obesity in children, and it can even cause diseases like heart disease and cancer in children. Can become the reason. |
Big danger of spoiling India's future
Dr. Arun Gupta of Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI) said, 'When you add added sugar to baby products, the baby likes it because of its good taste. Due to which parents happily buy the product, this increases the profits of the companies and they can do this because the rules are weak.
Even on such a big issue, Nestle gave a clarification that 'We believe in the nutritional quality of our products for children and give priority to the use of high quality ingredients. In the last five years, Nestlé India has reduced added sugar by 30 per cent.' And this claim of reducing the percentage is also misleading as on one hand the company had added suppose 1000 grams more sugar, out of which only 300 grams was lacking, which the company is showing as a big achievement with 30% reduction. This is actually a conspiracy to deceive consumers by creating confusion. Whereas about a small child, science believes that his taste glands develop on the basis of what he eats in childhood. Just like every person likes the food cooked by his mother because his mother fed him the same taste in childhood, the taste glands store the same taste in your memory and the same food eaten in childhood remains a habit throughout life. As soon as he eats high sugar food, he becomes a permanent consumer of high sugar products throughout his life and this habit of eating too much sugar, which he got in childhood by eating baby food like Nestle, leads to obesity, diabetes and many other problems. -Makes one a patient of various diseases. Even now, a serious and deep conspiracy is being run by multinational companies to make every person in this world a slave to eating chemical packed foods and claims of allopathy. This is an example of such a conspiracy of adulteration in baby food.
